Fellowship Shortfalls

A Timeline of the Gallegly Center's Development (2014-2016)

June 2014

Fellowship Deficits Emerge and are Covered by CLU

  • Proceeds from the Condoleezza Rice event did not cover the event’s costs, so there are no net gains available to launch the fellowships as originally anticipated.
  • VP of Enrollment Matt Ward later states the university “fronted” the fellowship awards with institutional funds in good faith.
  • Provost and VP of Academic Affairs Leanne Nielson confirms, under sworn testimony, that CLU “loaned” money to the Gallegly Center to cover first fellowships.

Fundraising & Planning Continue

  • Fundraising continues and modest one-time gifts come in; zero dollars raised for endowment.
  • Bond between Wheatley and Gallegly strengthens as they plan for a physical center.
  • University applies for grants to support archives and fellowships— none are awarded.

Modest Gifts & Continued Focus

  • Donor gifts, largely for annex construction, trickle in.
  • Still, no endowment gifts are made.
  • Fundraising focus remains on fellowships, the speaker series, the annex construction, and archival efforts.
  • Letters, files, and related materials remain boxed and in storage.
